Proteins are called the engineers of our body. Proteins are responsible for the good health of human being. Proteins are made up of small sub fractions, called a amino acids. These sub-fractions together make long chains. We can also call the long chains as a string of beads, where each bead in the chain is an amino acid.

There are total 21 amino acids that make up the whole protein. These 21 amino acids help to make different types of proteins in your body to grow healthy. Proteins help in building the body by working in the cells and repairing the injured ones. 

From 21 amino acids, there are 9 essential amino acids that a body needs the most. As body do not have the ability to produce these 9 essential amino acids. Whey protein is the purest protein which contains all these essential amino acids.

Body requires protein to grow and build strength in the body. Hormones are of three types:

  • Protein & peptides: these are the chains of amino acids. These helps to make the hormones in body for different functions.
  • Steroids: specially made from fat cholesterol. E.g. sex hormones, testosterone, and estrogen.
  • Amines: amines are made from single amino acids like tryptophan/tyrosine. These helps to make sleep hormones or metabolism hormone.

Proteins and peptides that helps to make hormones such as insulin helps to controls sugar in the body, glucagon helps to break down stored glucose in liver, hGH (human growth hormone) initiates the groth of different tissues and bones, ADH (anti-diuretic hormone)gives message to the kidney to absorb water, ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone) helps in metabolism.

Protein gives structure

Few proteins are fibrous that provides stiffness and rigidity to cells, tissues, and organs. The proteins that provide rigidity and stiffness are keratin, collagen, and elastin. These proteins give a connective framework and definite structure to the in body. These proteins give structure to various parts of body. For example keratin that can be found in skin, hair and nail. It helps them to grow better and strong. Keratin gives rigidity to your skin and acts as a barrier protection to protect the skin.

Collagen is found in body in abundance and it makes bones, tendons, ligaments, and skin rigid.

Elastin is highly elastic in nature that helps the tissues in the body to come back to its normal shape after stretching and contracting. Examples are uterus, lungs, and arteries.

Protein helps to maintain the concentration of acids as well as bases in your blood and other fluids. The pH of body is usually measure by the help of ph scale, ranging from 0 to 14, where 0 is considered the most acidic, 7 being the neutral and 14 is considered the most alkaline.

Everything has a pH value, for example stomach’s pH value is 2, tomato juice has a pH value 4, black coffee too has a pH value that is 5, pH of human blood is 7.5, milk of magnesia has a pH value 10, and pH of soapy water is 12.

Protein plays its role as a buffer system to allow the body fluids to be in their normal pH. It is important to maintain the pH of the body because slight change can cost your life.

Protein maintains body fluids

Proteins look after the body process that helps to maintain body fluids. Proteins such as albumin and globulin present in blood that maintains the body fluids balance. They maintain the balance by attracting and retaining water.

If you don’t eat proper amount of proteins, it may result a protein deficiency in your body. If your body is not having good amount of protein, the levels of albumin and globulin will simultaneously decreases.

If albumin and globulin decreases the, the flow of blood through blood vessels will stop and the body fluids will occupy the space between the cell resulting in inflammation, swelling or edema. Mostly this happens in stomach region. If this persists, your body can develop kwashiorkor (protein malnutrition).

Protein helps in making antibodies (immunoglobulin) to tackle down infections in the body. Proteins develop antibodies in blood in order to protect the body from foreign harmful invader like bacteria, viruses, etc. If there are no antibodies in the blood, you will be open to any harmful virus or bacteria that can make you fall seriously ill.

But if you body has produced antibodies that know a particular bacteria or virus, the next time it will kill the infection by making its antibodies. If you have a great immunity, the body prepares itself to fight against the invaders.

There are several other benefits of protein that plays a major role in the human body. They help to transport and store nutrients in the entire body and the most important is that it provides energy to the body. If you are fasting, proteins are the boon to give you energy and stay fresh. Even when you are exercising vigorously, protein intake can boost your energy.
